Spurred by advances in technology such as hydraulic fracturing and directional drilling, domestic oil and natural gas production has risen steadily for the past ten years, providing an important source of energy and revenue for the federal government and states. Oil production increased 67 percent between 2005 and 2014, and natural gas production increased 36 percent U.S. Energy Information Administration projects that U.S. crude oil and natural gas production will continue to rise through 2020, and that the United States will become a net natural gas exporter by 2017.
