Description (excerpt):
This report adds two new topics to the list of 30 detailed high-risk areas for the United States federal government:
- Limiting the Federal Government’s Fiscal Exposure by Better Managing Climate Change Risks.
- Mitigating Gaps in Weather Satellite Data.
The federal government is the world’s largest and most complex entity, with about $3.5trillion in outlays in fiscal year 2012 funding a broad array of programs and operations. GAO maintains a program to focus attention on government operations that is identifies as high risk due to their greater vulnerabilities to fraud, waste, abuse, and mismanagement or the need for transformation to address economy, efficiency or effectiveness changes.
