David Nelson Gimbel is a strategist for Autonomy Capital LLC and a Senior Visiting Scholar at theRenewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory (RAEL) - University of California
Berkeley.

His areas of focus include: state shifts in climate, biosphere, and natural resources; population growth and demography; and the energy transition.

Prior to joining Autonomy he was an advisor to the Spanish Delegation to UNESCO on climate change, the biosphere, and technology. From 1999-2011, he was the director of Archaeos, a non-profit organization dedicated to cultural heritage and to the archaeological and anthropological research.

Gimbel has served as a strategic consultant to a wide variety of organisations and directed numerous projects in the Middle East, Europe and India. He is a former visiting professor at the University of Vienna and the former associate director and cultural information manager for the Getty Conservation Institute & World Monuments Fund Iraq Cultural Heritage Conservation Initiative. Gimbel received his DPhil (PhD) from the Faculty of Oriental Studies, Oxford University; his MA from New York University; and his BA from Wesleyan University. He was a visiting scholar at Harvard University and at the American University in Cairo.
