Bipartisan Policy Center – Leveraging Natural Gas Networks to Achieve Net-Zero

Through thousands of miles of distribution systems, natural gas is delivered to more than 77 million residential, commercial and industrial customers in the U.S. This network can offer a valuable asset to leverage in the transition to a net-zero economy. The existing network can transport large volumes of renewable gases, such as biogas, or renewable natural gas and hydrogen, and can complement new infrastructure that may be required to move clean fuels to customers. Establishing a comprehensive strategy to demonstrate the pathway to natural gas network decarbonization can advance and enable achievement of net zero emissions by 2050 and provide stakeholders time to plan for the long-term.
