CSIS – Toward a G7 Climate Club?

At the G7 Summit held in June of this year, Leaders “endorsed the goals of an open and cooperative international Climate Club” and committed to working with partners toward its establishment by year-end. A stand-alone G7 statement on Climate Club linked its creation to “accelerating climate action and increasing ambition” to support the implementation of the Paris Agreement. However, the precise mechanisms by which the Club will accelerate the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions are unclear; while the qualifications, incentives, and obligations of Club membership are to be defined.

Please join the CSIS Economics Program for an expert panel discussion on the merits and challenges of a G7 Climate Club. Dr. Steffen Meyer, Director General for Economic, Financial and Climate Policy at the German Federal Chancellery, will kick off the discussion with a brief description of the Climate Club proposal.
