Institute for Carbon Removal and Policy – Scrubbing the Skies: NOAA CDR Task Force Panel

Join the Institute for Carbon Removal and Policy in the launching of its new webinar series, Scrubbing the Skies: The Role of Carbon Dioxide Removal in Combating Climate Change. This series will focus on scientific, technological, legal, political and justice-focused issues associated with carbon dioxide removal. The host for the series will be Wil Burns, Visiting Professor in the Environmental Policy & Culture Program at Northwestern University. Our third webinar in this series is: “NOAA’s CDR Task Force Panel.”

In November of 2020, the Senior Research Council of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Ocean and Atmospheric Research (OAR) charged OAR scientists with devising a draft portfolio of CDR strategic research needs in support of a broader climate recovery strategy set forth in executive orders. In response, NOAA formed the Carbon Dioxide Removal Task Team, an interdisciplinary team with relevant expertise in climate and carbon, coastal and open ocean science, aquaculture development, and ocean conservation. The CDR Task Team developed a draft strategy for CDR research at the agency which was endorsed by the NOAA Science Council in 2022.

This webinar will bring together several members of NOAA’s Carbon Dioxide Removal Task Team to summarize the agency’s new white paper on carbon dioxide removal, which outlines the federal government’s motivation for CDR work; NOAA’s related mandates; and NOAA’s key assets for supporting CDR research in multiple sectors. The panelists will also discuss NOAA strategies to ensure that notions of equity and justice are incorporated into all of its programs in this context.
