It’s A Cluster: The Challenge of Interconnecting Resources to Bulk Power & Distribution Grids
In the past few years, the number of projects mired in bulk interconnection queues has risen dramatically, with the median time from interconnection request to initial power flows now taking over five years. Smaller assets wishing to connect to distribution utility systems face their own hurdles. Meanwhile, demand pressures are increasing, with some utilities seeing requests to interconnect 10s of gigawatts of new load in the coming years. State and federal politicians and regulators are seeking to address these challenges, and new technologies – including AI – may help to address at least some of these impediments. This course will explain the challenges of both hooking up to the grid and building more transmission and distribution infrastructure. It will also look at various technologies that may help remediate the problem, and the efforts of politicians and regulators to find solutions.
