NEP August Webinar – Prospects for Nuclear in Puerto Rico and the Pacific Northwest
How can nuclear energy help regions achieve carbon reduction targets and maintain electric reliability and resilience? Based on a pair of reports by the Nuclear Alternative Project (NAP) and E3, this webinar will explore the prospects for nuclear to advance these goals in Puerto Rico and the Pacific Northwest. In their study, the NAP evaluates the feasibility of small modular reactors (SMRs) and microreactors in Puerto Rico, taking into consideration threats from hurricanes and other types of extreme weather, the electricity market and infrastructure, the current legal and regulatory framework, and public perception. E3’s study investigates various resource portfolios (including those with SMRs) and the consequences of zero-emitting generation on the cost of achieving carbon goals while maintaining electric system reliability. Senior leaders from NAP and E3 will share major questions guiding both studies, how they managed challenges and uncertainties, and takeaways for other states and regions seeking to analyze the role of nuclear energy in their generation portfolios.
The webinar is part of the NARUC-DOE Nuclear Energy Partnership and will be moderated by Commissioner Anthony O’Donnell of Maryland, and Commissioner Kimberly Duffley of North Carolina.
