But the industry has faced significant setbacks, and many countries—including the United States—are decommissioning more nuclear plants than they’re building. Incidents like Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Fukushima hang heavy in the world’s collective memory. Nuclear energy’s opponents also argue that its costs (and risks) are too high, and that there are too many variables for proper disposal of nuclear waste.
