Sustainable Aviation Fuel’s Potential: US Policy and Targeted Opportunity Regions

US commercial and business aviation emit roughly 11 percent of all emissions from the transportation sector in the United States and 3 percent of total US greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is the only scalable tool to decarbonize aviation right now, which is why the US government is taking significant action to incentivize the rapid production and deployment of SAF.

RMI explores the federal and state policy landscape, policy gaps, recommendations, and the path forward for SAF Target opportunity regions — select regions that have a competitive edge when it comes to producing and deploying SAF — featured in our latest report series in a webinar on March 7, 2024.

The webinar features opening remarks by Maria Martinez, Director, US Policy and Advocacy at Breakthrough Energy where she leads planning, evaluation, and strategy development, manages BE’s clean fuels policy portfolio, and develops engagement and advocacy strategies to advance the drive toward a net-zero economy.

Following is a short presentation by RMI experts and authors, Alex Piper, Aamir Shams, Corey Stewart, and Joey Cathcart who share their key learnings and recommendations from advising SAF projects as well as the opportunities for regions in the United States to accelerate their economic growth.

Closing remarks are presented by Andrew Chen, Principal, RMI.
