Description (excerpt):
Clean hydrogen is a key part of a comprehensive portfolio of technologies and fuels needed to achieve our nation’s
climate goals and build a sustainable, secure, and equitable clean energy economy. Clean hydrogen, which has very low or zero emissions, can be produced in every part of the country and from virtually any energy resource (such as renewables, nuclear, or fossil energy with carbon capture). And it can be used in many applications: as a
transportation fuel, where it can be converted to electricity in a fuel cell, with no emissions other than water vapor; as a fuel for combustion to provide high temperature industrial heat; or as a chemical feedstock or reactant, including as a component of biofuels.
The Multi-Year Program Plan (MYPP) sets forth the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office’s (HFTO’s) mission, goals, and strategic approach relative to broader clean energy priorities of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Aligned with the priorities in the U.S. National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap, the MYPP identifies the challenges that must be overcome to realize the full potential of clean hydrogen and fuel cells and explains how HFTO’s research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) activities will help to overcome those challenges in the near-, mid-, and longer-term.
