Reliable and affordable energy is a fundamental part of our lives. Energy is needed to provide heat, light and cooking in our homes; it is used for communication, transportation and industrial processes; and it is the engine that supports our country’s economy. Reliable and affordable clean energy options address two of our nation’s most pressing challenges: economic growth and energy security. The Business Council for Sustainable Energy’s coalition of industries—energy efficiency, renewable energy and natural gas—together provide a portfolio of reliable and affordable options to address two of our nation’s most pressing challenges: economic growth and energy security. Clean energy …
View Full ResourceWhen launched in October 2013, SAFE’s Oil Security Index was hailed as an essential tool for those seeking greater insight into both what constitutes oil security, and which countries are most oil secure. The Index included then-current and historical data tracing national rankings back to 2000. In the first update for 2015, SAFE adds data through Q3 2014 and revises the rankings accordingly. The Index’s seven metrics capture three core aspects of oil security: the structural dependency of countries’ economies on oil, the economic exposure of countries to oil prices and the changes in those prices, and the physical supply …
View Full ResourceRenewable energy offers greater lifecycle value when compared to fossil or nuclear energy, and provides a more reliable and secure resource, which ultimately lowers the actual levelized cost to US DOD. This paper asserts that – with improved supply-chain accounting for costs of present installation energy and realignment of some FAR processes – private, third-party capital investment would exponentially grow. Further improvements in the responsibility structure at US DOD and the military services for overseeing this process are also suggested. As a result of such changes, US DOD and the private sector could meet and exceed their renewable energy and …
View Full Resourcehe United States is reducing oil dependence, slowing the growth of electricity needs, and making energy services more affordable to all Americans. Oil and energy consumption remain well below levels seen a decade ago, renewable energy is surging, and growth in U.S. electricity sales continues to decline. NRDC’s 2014 review of the most recent data shows the economic and environmental performance of America’s energy systems has never been better. The single most important contributor to these positive trends is energy efficiency, the nation’s largest and most inexpensive resource to meet our energy needs. Efficiency has allowed America to get more …

View Full ResourceAs Western governments have responded to Russia’s continued efforts to destabilize Ukraine, the potential for US natural gas exports to inflict economic pain on Moscow and undermine its influence in Europe have made for some eye-catching headlines—try searching the Internet for “hit Putin where it hurts” or “get Putin’s attention” for a sampling. To cut through the hyperbole surrounding this issue, the Columbia University Center on Global Energy Policy undertook a study that provides a cool-headed examination of the impact of US LNG exports on European energy security and Russian foreign policy.

View Full ResourceEven in the land of energy plenty, however, too many Americans suffer from energy insecurity; they cannot afford the energy required to heat or cool their homes or secure other basic needs such as refrigeration. These Americans, while not suffering from extreme “energy poverty,” are still too often faced with harsh choices between paying for energy and paying for food, medical care, and other basic needs. Their plight forces us to confront two important questions: What is the social cost of increased energy prices? And, conversely, what is the social benefit of lower energy prices? This paper addresses those questions …

In the United States, the electric power grid consists of over 200,000 miles of high-voltage transmission lines interspersed with hundreds of large electric power transformers. High voltage (HV) transformer units make up less than 3% of transformers in U.S. power substations, but they carry 60%-70% of the nation’s electricity. Because they serve as vital nodes and carry bulk volumes of electricity, HV transformers are critical elements of the nation’s electric power grid. HV transformers are also the most vulnerable to intentional damage from malicious acts. Recent security exercises, together with a 2013 physical attack on transformers in Metcalf, CA, have …
