Description (excerpt):

In 2007 the transportation sector emitted almost 7 gigatonnes (Gt), or billion metric tons, of carbon dioxide—roughly a quarter of the world’s total energy-related emissions. Road transportation, with 5 Gt of CO2, made up the lion’s share of the sector’s emissions. CO2 emissions from road transport are expected to grow by more than 2 percent per year between 2010 and 2030, largely spurred by the dramatic increase in the number of automobiles hitting the roads in China, India, and other developing economies.
